Jacksonville carpenter steps-up to help a war veteran regain his independence

A two-time war veteran whose injuries have him confined to a wheelchair is getting the help he needs to regain his independence, thanks to a member of the Florida Carpenters Regional Council.

Ben Wood, a member of Jacksonville Local 702, learned of the plight of James Jackson and didn’t hesitate to step up and help the wounded vet by building him a wheelchair ramp for his west Jacksonville home.

A request for the ramp is held up with the Veterans Administration. Meanwhile, Jackson’s doctors can’t release him to his home until the environment is safe.  That’s where Wood comes in. He will partner with a local non-profit organization called Builder’s Care to get the project completed.

“We will be doing everything to code and all ADA regulations,” said Wood in a television news segment about the project. Watch that news piece by clicking here.

“The Florida Carpenters Regional Council is very proud Ben,” said Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer and fellow Jacksonville resident, James Banks. “He exemplifies the commitment to community and service to others, which is a core value of our union.”
