Frank D'Angelo (shown, far right) speaks while fellow FLCRC staff and members rally
The Florida Carpenters Regional Council (FLCRC) recently joined forces with like-minded area workforce and civic groups to demand improved conditions for workers in Miami-Dade County. WeCount, an advocacy group that organizes outdoor workers, held a press conference at Miami-Dade County Hall to call for higher wages, access to healthcare, water breaks, protection against wage theft and misclassification, and affordable housing.
These demands are particularly relevant in light of the Swerdlow Group's proposed $3 billion mixed-use public housing project in the Little River and Little Haiti communities. The coalition aims to ensure that the workers who help build this project receive fair wages and working conditions. "We believe that all workers, regardless of their industry or background, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect," said Frank D’Angelo, FLCRC Political Director "By advocating for these demands, we hope to create a more equitable and just workplace for everyone."
D’Angelo was joined at the rally by members and staff of the FLCRC, the Build a Better Miami Coalition (https://www.we-count.org/buildbettermia), “Black Men Build,” and several church groups.
The coalition's efforts are gaining momentum, with support from various community groups and organizations. As the proposed project moves forward, the coalition will continue to pressure the Swerdlow Group and the Miami-Dade Commission to adopt policies that prioritize the well-being of workers. In fact, the FLCRC has already scheduled its first in-person meeting with Swerdlow, and the project is set to be presented to the full Miami-Dade commission in November.
